GGL launches whitelist to enhance gambling transparency in Germany

The Gemeinsame Glücksspielbehörde der Länder (GGL), Germany’s Gaming Commission, has unveiled an interactive whitelist to streamline gambling regulation and improve consumer protection. The new tool empowers users with greater transparency and ease of use. This development is part of GGL’s broader mission to regulate the online gambling market while addressing concerns about gambling addiction and illegal operators.

Key features of whitelist

The updated whitelist introduces several enhancements designed to make it user-friendly and effective. It offers an advanced search and filtering system, allowing users to locate gambling companies based on categories such as sports betting, online poker, social lotteries, horse betting, and savings lotteries.

Additionally, the tool provides detailed information about the licences held by each company, including the types and number of licences issued. Another notable feature is the ability to filter companies based on their licensing authority, whether it is the GGL or the Gambling Supervisory Authority of the State.

Focus on consumer safety

The emphasised that “with the redesign, GGL is pursuing its goal of channelling the online gambling market and preventing gambling and betting addiction, as consumers can now check directly on the GGL website which gambling providers are legal or illegal”. Any company not listed on the whitelist is to be considered unauthorised, ensuring clear guidelines for both consumers and providers.

Aligning with the interstate treaty on gambling 2021

The revamped whitelist complies with the Interstate Treaty on Gambling 2021, which requires all licensed organisers and intermediaries of games of chance in Germany to be listed. This measure promotes transparency in the gambling industry while enabling consumers and providers to make informed decisions.

Earlier this month, the GGL held discussions with state co-ordinators to enhance sustainable gambling regulation. The meeting focused on enforcing robust regulatory frameworks, further strengthening the GGL’s ability to oversee and guide the industry effectively.
