Singapore to relax travel restrictions from 1 September

This move is part of the initiative to revive the tourism industry in the country which was badly affected by the pandemic

Visitors to Singapore coming in from Brunei and New Zealand or have stayed in any of those two countries in the last 14 days will not undergo the mandatory quarantine period upon arrival to Singapore. However, they will still be required to take a COVID-19 test.

The measure by the Singapore government which will take effect on 1 September, includes general travel and students travel which will all depend on the entry requirements by the government. Meanwhile, Singapore authorities reminded locals to postpone overseas travels if not for study or official trip.

Singapore authorities said this move is part of the initiative to revive the tourism industry in the country, which was badly affected by the travel restrictions brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, travelers from “low-risk” regions such as mainland China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Vietnam, Macau and Australia, excluding Victoria, will have to undergo a 7-day quarantine period instead of 14 days, and would be required to take the Covid-19 test prior to the end of their quarantine period.

Even with the eased-up restrictions, travelers to Singapore must continue to secure a pre-approval to land, except for travelers from Brunei and New Zealand, who may enter the state on tourist visas.

Education minister Lawrence Wong said “For travelers who have been in Brunei and New Zealand in the last 14 days prior to entry, when they arrive in Singapore, they will undergo a test at the airport, and there is no need to serve a stay-home notice.

However, Wong added that the current arrangements with Brunei and New Zealand is not “reciprocal”, but there are on-going discussions regarding the provisions.

Singapore’s integrated resorts Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World Sentosa have had gradual reopening over the past weeks, initially opening up resort attractions and retail outlets, and eventually allowing casino entry for select membership card holders.
